Deep Clean vs. Standard Clean: What You're Actually Paying For

Almost every call we get starts the same way: someone wants a price for cleaning their house. The honest answer is that there are two very different jobs hiding inside that request, and quoting the wrong one is how people end up disappointed. So here is the difference, laid out plainly enough that you can decide before you ever pick up the phone.

A standard or general clean is maintenance. It covers the surfaces you touch and see every day — counters wiped, sinks and toilets sanitized, showers and mirrors cleaned, furniture dusted, floors vacuumed and mopped, trash taken out. It assumes the home is already in reasonable shape and just needs a reset. In a home on a bi-weekly schedule, that's the right service almost every time, and it's the cheaper of the two by a wide margin.

A deep clean is restoration. It includes everything in a standard clean, then adds all the things that get skipped when someone is working through a house in two hours. Grout scrubbed rather than mopped over. Soap scum broken down instead of wiped around. Baseboards, door frames, trim, vents, and ceiling fans hand-wiped. Window sills and tracks cleaned out. Cabinet fronts degreased. Appliance interiors — oven, microwave, refrigerator — done by hand. Furniture moved so the floor underneath actually gets cleaned.

Here is the test we use. Run a finger along the top edge of a door frame or the blade of a ceiling fan. Look at the corner where your shower floor meets the wall. Pull out the refrigerator drawer. If those spots make you wince, no amount of standard cleaning is going to fix them — they need the deep service once, and then a regular schedule keeps them from getting there again.

This is also why we usually recommend starting a recurring client with a deep clean. If we begin with standard visits on a home that hasn't had detailed work in a few years, we spend every visit fighting buildup that was already there and never quite getting ahead. One deep clean at the start means every visit after it is faster, cheaper, and more thorough.

How often does a home need the deep version? For most households in the Tri-Cities, once or twice a year. Homes with pets, kids, wood stoves, or heavy pollen exposure lean toward twice. Homes on a consistent bi-weekly schedule can often stretch to once a year, because the maintenance visits are doing real work in between.

A few situations always call for a deep clean regardless of schedule: before you list a house, after a renovation, before or after a move, following an illness in the household, and before hosting anyone whose opinion you care about.
